Indian Rupee got its identity

Indian Currency Symbol

15 July 2010, a notable day in Indian History. Indian Rupees has got a new identity.

This symbol was selected through a public competition. Udaykumar an IIT Student has registered his name in Indian History.

This symbol will be included in Unicode letters. At the moment we don’t have  a way to type the letter.

Finalists for Indian Currency Symbol

Indian currency doesn’t have a unique symbol or identity. So far Rs or Re have been used to denote the Indian currency.

Last year, Govt of India decided to create symbol for Indian currency which should capture the sense of India’s history and culture. A competition was announced last year to public to provide suggestions.

There are five symbols that are shortlisted now, to choose a suitable symbol to represent Indian currency.

Competition For Design – Take part in historical event

Most of the countries have identification symbols for their currency. $ is for U.S Dollar, £ for GBP, for Euro etc.,

But Indian currency, Rupee, does not have a unique identification symbol. So for, Rs has been used to denote the Indian currency and there is no official symbol to identify the Indian Currency.

Recently Government of India – Ministry of Finance announced Competition for Design to finalize an official identification symbol for Indian currency.

This would be a great opportunity for all artists and designers to take part in this historical competition.

Are you not an artist? No worries, still you can take part in the historical event.

Economic Times came up with a set of currency designs that are designed by it’s designers. This has been released to public to select the best design out of the set.

All these designs along with the public view will be sent to Ministry of Finance.  Visit the following link to select your own symbol from the set.
