Are you the one who often use emoticons in your mails? Then you have a great news today from GMail Labs.

Google introduced emoticons on October 2008 through Gmail Labs.

A new release in GMail labs, Extra Emoji, showered with a lots of emoticons.

Below is the list of emoticons released by Extra Emoji.

Using emoticons in mails are always fun and makes the mail better in terms of look and feel.

GMail or GMail BETA?

GMail BETA was released on 01 Apr 2004 and currently being used by a huge number of people. GMail BETA will be celebrating it’s 5th anniversary on coming 01 April 2009.

The initial launch was with subscriptions that are based on invitations. Few years latter it was open to public which significantly increased the number of GMail users.

However still it will be with the BETA label. Isn’t strange to have BETA for a product which is doing good(?) over five years?

Although GMail BETA often announces new features it will still have the label BETA with it.

What is the big deal in the BETA?
Well, having a bug in stable release is much different than having a bug in BETA release. Isn’t?

If this continues for few more years, no wonder if, GMail would be called as GMail BETA.

GMail Video Chat

Video Chat is one of the important facility which was missing in Google. So far we would have used Skype or Yahoo for Video chatting.

Google now introduced Video Chat in GMail. Yes, this facility has been integrated with GMail and not with GTalk application.

You can install the video chat plugin to avail this feature. This plugin works in all major browsers. I have tested this in Firefox.

This will definitely be a threat to Skype. But still most of us will continue in Skype as it has more options than in Google Video Chat.

How to protect your GMail account?

Do you concern about unauthorised access to your Google Mail account?

GMail has an in-built solution for this issue.

At the bottom of your GMail page, you will find “Last account activity” followed by “Details”.

Click on “Details” link which will show your recent GMail account access.

From this, you will be able to find out if and when unauthorised agents accessed your mail.

As shown in the above image, you can find “AccessType”, “Date and Time” including the “IP Address”.

If your Google Mail account is currently being accessed from another location, this table will list the other session(s) in the “Concurrent session information” table.

If you find a suspicious or simultaneous access, then you can sign-out all other sessions, except yours from this session window. Then you can make necessary steps by changing the password/security question to avoid unauthorised access.

This is an excellent service provided by GMail. This will help you to protect your GMail account from unauthorised use.

Google Docs and Calendar in GMail

Google never stopped experimenting new things. GMail Labs is an example for this. As part of this Labs feature, recently GMail introduced two new Labs features.

Google Calendar and Google Docs now can be added into the left side bar in GMail.

If you are using Google Calendar for events/anniversary remainders, then it would be definitely useful for you.

Emoticons in GMail

Emoticons have been introduced in GMail recently. Now you can compose mails with rich set of emoticons collection given in the compose panel.

The emoticons have been categorized under two categories Rounded and Square emoticons.
